Digital Citizenship

Keeping students safe on-line is a priority here at Portage Public Schools.  While the district uses modern internet filtering and firewall services to help accomplish this goal, we also know helping students make good choices when online is also a key.  To that end, Portage Public Schools has partnered with Common Sense Digital Media to offer resources to our staff and parents to assist them in helping our students to become responsible users of computing technology.  We call this effort Digital Citizenship.

What is Digital Citizenship?

Digital Citizenship is the skills and knowledge needed to effectively use the Internet and other technology resources appropriately, safely, responsibly, and respectfully.

Digital Citizenship topics commonly include:

  • Internet Safety
  • Privacy and Security
  • Relationships, Communication, and Etiquette
  • Cyberbullying and Digital Drama
  • Digital Footprints and Reputation
  • Information Literacy
  • Creative Credit and Copyright

Why do I need to worry about it?

From cyberbullying and photo sharing to digital footprints and online safety, our children live in a world full of technology. As parents and educators, we need to work with our kids on making great choices in their digital lives so they can use the Internet and technology in a fun, educational, and safe way.
